DEVELOPMENT ROOTED IN TRADITION
The development of Tapiola is rooted in the area's long traditions as a garden city. The goal is to create a vibrant and pleasant urban centre in a green, leafy setting.
AINOA is a new complex that brings together the best characteristics of a traditional city centre and a modern shopping facility in a unique way. It represents modern architecture that draws its influences from the surrounding Tapiola district, which is one of the oldest and best-known garden cities in Finland, making it important both culturally and historically.
AINOA first opened its doors in October 2013. The first phase of its extension reached completion in March 2017 and the final phase will be completed in autumn 2019.
The first part of the extension
The second stage of AINOA, and the first part of the extension, was completed on 16 March 2017. As a result, the area increased from 10,000 square metres to 30,000, and the number of shops rose to 50.
In terms of space, AINOA is in the same category as Kamppi shopping centre in Helsinki. At this second stage, the service selection of the shopping centre was complemented by Stockmann's new department store and 20 other stores, restaurants and cafés.
The rooftop of the new extension houses almost 130 flats, which were completed in May 2017. After the second stage of the extension project, the Kirjokansi housing development will feature about 250 flats. Kirjokansi offers unique, high-quality housing in the most central part of Tapiola.
Thanks to its close proximity to extensive services and transport connections, the housing complex, which is also directly connected to AINOA's parking facility, brings additional comfort and ease to day-to-day living. The buildings' own rooftop gardens, which offer wonderful views over the area, complete this unique living environment.Read more about Kirjokansi.
Completion in autumn 2019
The second part of AINOA's extension will be built above the former Stockmann department store. The old store has now been demolished and the final part of the extension, to be opened in autumn 2019, will be built in the area. After the completion of this phase, AINOA will house more than 120 specialist stores, restaurants, cafés and other services.
In the design of the project, special attention was paid to blending the new shopping centre with its unique urban surroundings. AINOA opens up in every direction, creating a connected entity with central Tapiola. The AINOA complex was designed by SARC Architects, led by Professor Antti-Matti Siikala.
